Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are becoming highly popular. This is quite expected, as they allow us to browse the web privately and even faster sometimes. Nowadays, every MB is invaluable, just like personal data is.
However, in order to use a VPN on your phone or PC, you have to install apps like Tunnelbear or go for free options, and this is something that you have to do on each and every one of your devices. Does it have to be this way?
Not really, and here is the upside of having a VPN router: you can force the router to redirect traffic to a VPN. Your devices will still be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network, but the router will be responsible for redirecting the traffic through another IP address.
Really useful, right? Here comes the bad news: the best VPN routers are high-end devices, really expensive and not so common. This kind of technology is not widespread yet, so only a few brands on the market use it.
These routers allow us to easily enable a VPN or make it easier for us to install a third-party software to work as a VPN. Here are some of the routers.
1. Linksys WRT3200ACM-EU
This is an all-around affordable model, especially if we compare it to similar routers. As its name tells us, the router allows us to install the DD-WRT software so we can easily connect to any VPN.
Besides, it comes with the 802.11ac standard, USB 3.0, and delivers speeds of over 800 Mbps. This is great, and it is just €160.
2. ASUS RT-AC5300
This VPN router belongs to a famous brand that has a lot of high-end models on the market. This is one of those models, and it is similar to the rest.
This router has a great number of antennas, making the coverage at home excellent. It is also a tri-band router, which improves the online gaming experience a lot.
It comes with a firmware that allows us to easily set up a VPN with DD-WRT. The biggest downside is its current price: €340.
3. Netgear Nighthawk R7800-100PES
This router is amazing in terms of features and design. Its black finish is excellent. It also guarantees coverage for almost the entire house with its four antennas.
Its 1,733 Mbps speed is one of the best you can find right now. Besides, it has IPTV to improve stability and speed when streaming online.
Like the two previous routers, this Netgear router is compatible with VPNs because it allows us to install external software. Its current price in Spain is €202, which is quite affordable for what the router provides.
4. ASUS RT-AC86U
If none of the previous routers please you, try browsing the web privately with this ASUS router.
In terms of speed and DD-WRT compatibility, this router works like the others, although in this case this is a MU-MIMO router, which is something to take into account if you live in a big house or in a house with a lot of obstacles. We do not always have to get PLC or extenders if we have a good router.
Of course, you can easily set up a VPN with this router, although it is evident that you should know your way around DD-WRT.
The price is €230.
